Restoration of tile tableaux
The restoration of the tile tableaux on the Rijksmuseum façades - quite a substantial job. Many tiles had been affected by the test of time and climatic influences.
The affected tiles had to be replaced by intact examples. The colours, painting style and character had to match the original tiles. Not only that, the ‘new’ tiles had to fit exactly into what still remained of the tableaux.
In such a case it is vitally important that the new tiles cannot be distinguished from the old.
